Youth Side Hustle
Applications Open April 1
Special Areas, Alberta — Community Futures Meridian Region and Special Areas Regional Economic Development are pleased to announce the launch of the Youth Side Hustle Program, a hands-on entrepreneurship initiative designed to help rural youth develop real-world business skills and explore self-employment as a future career path.
Applications for the program will open on April 1, 2026, and youth in Grades 7–12 living within the Special Areas region are encouraged to apply. Due to limited capacity, two to three participants will be selected from each school in the region.
The Youth Side Hustle Program is a seven-module digital entrepreneurship program that helps youth learn how to turn their ideas into small businesses. Participants will explore topics such as branding, budgeting, business planning, and customer service while also reflecting on their own strengths and personal goals.
The program is designed to be inclusive and accessible to youth with both visible and invisible disabilities. Through mentorship, worksheets, and one-on-one coaching, participants will gain practical skills and confidence while learning how entrepreneurship can provide flexibility and independence.
Participants who complete the program will also receive a $200 incentive to support the launch of their side hustle idea.
“Programs like Youth Side Hustle help young people in rural communities see the possibilities available to them,” said Lori Feader, CEO of Community Futures Meridian Region. “Entrepreneurship provides an opportunity for youth to build confidence, develop practical skills, and create income in ways that work for their lives.”
The program reflects the growing importance of entrepreneurship as a flexible career option. Research shows that many young people face barriers in traditional employment, particularly those living with disabilities or mental health challenges. By introducing entrepreneurial thinking early, the program helps youth build skills that can benefit them throughout their lives.
The Youth Side Hustle Program will be delivered online through guided modules and supported by individual coaching to ensure participants receive personalized support.
Communities, schools, and families across the Special Areas region are encouraged to share the opportunity with youth who may be interested in exploring business ownership.
Applications open April 1, 2026.
